Ephesius, an Atheniensis? tempore Socratis, pictor insignis, sed quô nemo insolentius et arrogantius sit usus gloriâ artis, Plin. Hîc primus symmetriam picturae dedit, primus argutias vultus, elegantiam capilli, venustatem oris expressit, et artificum confessione in lineis extremis palmam adeptus est. Superatus tamen est a Timante in Aiace. Idem venit in certamen cum Xeuxide. Et cum ille detulisset uvas pictas tantô successu, ut in scenam aves advolarent, ipse detulisse linteum pictum traditur, ita veritate repraesentatâ, ut Xeuxis, alitum iudiciô tumens, flagitaret tandem remotô linteô ostendi picturam, atque intellectô errore concederet palmam ingenuô pudore, quoniam ipse aves fefellisset, Parrhasius autem se artificem, Plinius l. 35. c. 10.
